Precautions and Side Effects

    • Due to its caffeine content, kola nut should be avoided by pregnant and nursing women and those who suffer from insomnia or anxiety disorders. People with high blood pressure, high cholesterol and any sort of cardiac problems should also avoid kola nut. Since it stimulates production of gastric juices, those who suffer from ulcers should avoid taking it as it may aggravate these conditions. It is also a common allergen so be aware of any reactions you have to it. Side effects include insomnia, anxiety, nervousness, stomach upset and tremors. Diarrhea, nausea and cramps may indicate an overdose.

    Appearance

    • Kola trees grow to about 40 feet. They have either yellow or white flowers with spots ranging from red to purple. The leaves are six to eight inches long and it bears a star-shaped fruit.
